Curriculum
The Assistant Superintendent is responsible for managing, updating, and coordinating the common curriculum for Region One.
“The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy that are grounded in evidence and designed to ensure that all students have the academic knowledge and skills they need in these core subjects to succeed after high school. The CCSS were developed in a state-led process under the leadership of governors and chief state school officers with participation from 48 states. The process included the involvement of state departments of education, districts, teachers, community leaders, experts in a wide array of fields, and professional educator organizations.” Connecticut State Department of Education
“State NGSS assessments aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are administered to all public school students in Connecticut at Grades 5, 8, and 11. The tests at each grade assess students’ understanding of the NGSS across the corresponding grade band (3-5, 6-8, and 9-12). Information about the science standards can be found at www.nextgenscience.org.” Connecticut State Department of Education

Youth Voices Count Survey
Last spring, Region One schools administered the Youth Voices Count Survey (YVC) to grades 7-12; this student climate and well-being survey provides insight into how students experience belonging, relationships, safety, engagement, and their access to support. Emily Rosenthal, of the Northwest Corner Prevention Network, helped administer the survey and assess the data collected with a multidisciplinary team of counselors, social workers, PE/Health teachers, and administrators from each school who used the information to develop a response plan. The survey is administered every two years; it does not evaluate individuals, but guides data-informed decision-making and fosters a whole-child approach to education.
