Middle School Regional Athletics and Activities Proposal

The History Behind the Proposal:

The idea of a regional sports team for Middle School students began over ten years ago, with coaches. In the past two years, more groups—parents, coaches, rec center directors—have spoken about this topic. In the past, all six schools fielded teams consisting of 7th and 8th graders in each season (soccer in the fall; basketball in the winter; baseball/softball in the spring).  Schools would play each other for a ten-game season. With declining enrollment and being unable to field teams by themselves, schools needed to join with other schools (co-op) as well as add 6th graders to the team in order to field teams.

By adding 6th graders to the team, the town rec programs were not able to field U12 teams, which impacts the 5th graders (not having a team to participate on) as well as a large physical difference between a 6th grader and an 8th grader.  This concept of a regional athletic program was originally brought forth several years ago by then MS athletic director Jim Terrall.  By offering a regional program, students would be able to have more options both athletically and extracurricular; students interact with more students from all six towns, which will help the adjustment to high school better.
