HVRHS Principal Announces Retirement

Falls Village, Connecticut (February 22, 2018) - Dr. Jose Martinez announced his retirement as principal at Housatonic Valley Regional High School at the Region One Board of Education meeting Thursday night. His retirement will become effective June 30, 2018. Dr. Martinez explained that this decision was made in order to spend more time with his family.

“My role as the principal at Housatonic Valley Regional High School over the past four years has been an extremely rewarding experience for me,” said Dr. Jose Martinez. “I am grateful for the opportunity to be such an integral part of the HVRHS community and to work alongside so many talented teachers and administrators throughout the Region One public school district.”

Prior to his retirement, Dr. Martinez will remain highly committed to the continued success of Housatonic Valley Regional High School. His main focus will be ensuring the completion of the NEASC accreditation process, as well as working closely with teachers to support the achievement of their stated professional goals. Dr. Martinez also plans to ensure the timely completion of teacher observations and evaluations, while fully supporting the school’s transition to a new principal.

“Dr. Martinez has achieved many accomplishments and made a positive impact on the HVRHS community throughout his four years as principal,” said Region One Superintendent Dr. Pam Vogel. During his four years in this role, Dr. Martinez implemented several significant programs, including the initiation of a 1:1 computer-to-student Chromebook program in 2015. He also effectively managed the school’s Safety and Security Grant to enhance building safety features, increased mental health services for students, and implemented a plan to improve public relations with parents and community.

The Region One Board thanked Dr. Martinez for his time and contributions to the school and accepted his announcement to retire, with regret. The discussion that followed concerned a successor to Dr. Martinez. The Board strongly supported the recommendation from Dr. Vogel to consider Mr. Ian Strever, currently the assistant principal, to fill the position of HVRHS principal. Mr. Strever stated that he would be honored to assume the position, dependent upon approval of the board. Dr. Vogel expressed that Mr. Strever knows the staff, the students, the families and the communities and has dedicated these last eight years to continuous improvement at our high school. “He has a clear understanding of our programs that prepare students for the ever-changing world we live in and would ensure that we make continuous growth in providing a high quality education for each and every student.”

The Region One Board of Education voted to support the candidacy of Ian Strever for the position of Housatonic Valley Regional High School and is planning a joint meeting with the ABC Committee on March 5 in anticipation of crafting a joint recommendation. Dr. Vogel will meet with representative high school teachers to hear their ideas and feedback prior to the March 5 joint meeting.
