How U.S. News Calculated the 2019 Best High Schools Rankings

There has been discussion about the ratings that came out recently in the U.S. News and World Report, regarding the ranking of Connecticut and U.S high schools. It's important to know how the rankings are calculated.

The data are from the 2016-2017 school year- two years ago. In addition, 40% of the total score is based on the number of seniors who take AP classes and who also take the test and receive a score of 3 or above.

At HVRHS, it has been discussed with High School teachers and the Board as to whether or not students must take the AP test. The Region One Board encourages students to take the test, but the district has not required the test. There will likely be more discussion between the Board and administration as to whether or not there is a change to this policy, but this has been the practice for a number of years.

2016-2017 was the first year that the SAT was used as Connecticut's state test. This is the assessment data provided for the reading and math scores.
