About Our Superintendent

For the past two years, Dr. Vogel served as the Assistant Superintendent in Region One. In May 2016, the All Board Chairs (ABC) Committee announced her as superintendent of Region One, beginning July 1, 2017.

“Dr. Vogel clearly possesses the leadership qualifications the board was seeking, and her dedication, commitment and expertise will help guide our region during the coming years,” said Thomas Levine, Board Chair of the Cornwall School District. “Among her many qualifications for the position of superintendent of our region, none stood out more then Dr. Vogel's deep and lifelong passion for education and her desire to create the strongest possible learning environment for the students in our district.”

Dr. Vogel, in her previous career, worked as a teacher of students with special needs, as Director of Curriculum/Instruction, Middle School Principal, and Supervisor of Leadership Development for schools served by an intermediate educational agency. She served as Superintendent of Schools for the East Union Community School District in Iowa from 2008-2015. For five years, she was an Instructor at Iowa State University, teaching classes in the superintendent licensure program.

During her tenure as Superintendent, some of district improvements were a summer school literacy program for K-5 students, Interest Based Bargaining/Negotiations between administration and the teacher’s union, student led conferences, a Partnering in Communities group to raise awareness of student and family needs, the 1:1 computer program for student in grades 6-12, grading practices leading to standards based grading, a Life Skills education program and Special Olympics for students with special needs, and Competency Based Education and acceleration opportunities for students to advance in courses and/or grade levels. The district was also one of the first in the state to create a teacher leadership program.

She facilitated the “Invest in Our Kids” committee that enabled the five communities to pass a bond referendum to build a new PK-5 school. She assisted the district by writing grants totaling 2.2 million dollars that financed a portion of the building costs and enabled the district to build an Early Childhood Center for children ages 2-4.

In 2009, she was awarded the Jordan Larson Dissertation Award for Excellence in Education. The Iowa Association of School Librarians presented her with the Distinguished Advocate Award in 2014. Dr. Vogel was also recognized nationally for her work in the field of education, as a recipient of the UCEA (University Council for Educational Administration) for Educational Administration Excellence in Educational Leadership award in 2015.

Her undergraduate degree was in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Iowa. She holds a Masters Degree in Secondary Special Education and an Education Specialist Degree from Drake University. She received her doctoral degree from Iowa State University.

Dr. Vogel has been active in various educational groups and agencies. As a teacher, she coached Special Olympics. She also served as an executive board member of ASCD (Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development) International (2013-2016), as well as board member for the state ASCD affiliate association, where she was Co-chair of Advocacy and Influence and lobbied at both state and national levels for educational funding and programs. She was appointed to several state committees with the Iowa Department of Education and was trained as a facilitator for Instructional Rounds in the Harvard University Program with Dr. Richard Elmore and Dr. Elizabeth City.

She is proud to have the opportunity to work in Region One with dedicated educators, parents, and community members to ensure that our schools are optimal places for students to learn and to grow—academically, socially, and emotionally. Her goal is for all of our schools to ensure a positive and caring learning environment, always maintaining a strong focus on delivering excellent educational opportunities that match the interests and needs for every student. Her belief is that everyone who works in our schools must be student centered and driven by student results, as each child’s quality of life depends upon their quality of education and all children deserve the opportunity to reach their fullest potential.
