Message from Dr. Martinez                                                                                           May 19, 2017

The reason for this message is to share the news about the bell schedule for Housatonic Valley Regional High School for the 2017-2018 school year. This information went to teachers, staff and students last night and this morning.

Over the past few months there has been much discussion about the bell schedule. I thank students, teachers, parents, and community members for sharing your thoughts about the bell schedule.

You will see that the resulting bell schedule has a 6-day rotation where the first two days have four 75 minute classes. The next four days have six 50 minute classes. Each day has time for either intervention or enrichment (IE), Personalized Learning Portfolio (PLP), or activity block. In many ways this is not a big change from what the schedule currently is.

There may be some minor adjustments to times for lunch or I/E or placement of PLP, but the overall structure of the bell schedule is set for the 2017-2018 year.

Below are some characteristics of the 2017-2018 bell schedule:

  • Time for Intervention/Enrichment (I/E)
  • Time for Personalized Learning Portfolio (PLP)
  • Time for Activity Block. Some activity block options include:
    • FFA officer meetings,
    • Student Government Association,
    • Helping Hands community service,
    • Silent Reading,
    • Robotics,
    • Social Skills (special education),
    • American Field Service (AFS),
    • Academic Bowl,
    • Captain's Meeting (leadership training),
    • Debate Club,
    • Empowering Young Women,
    • Gay/Straight Alliance,
    • Mountainside,
    • Yearbook,
    • and other options.
  • Mix of short and long classes (50 or 75 minutes)
  • Not all classes are taught in one day – giving students a chance to focus on fewer than eight classes every day
  • For 4 of 6 days, the G and H classes are the last two periods of the day, allowing for earlier dismissal. Early dismissals could be used for work study or internship opportunities
  • For 4 of 6 days, A and B classes are at the start of the day, allowing for late arrival. Late arrivals could be used for work study or internship opportunities
  • Time can be built into the schedule for common planning for teachers.

I believe this bell schedule will serve the students of Housatonic Valley Regional High School well. See bell schedule below

Respectfully yours,
‚Äč
